Is There a ScanTailor Advanced Online, Android or iOS Version?
Short answer: no. ScanTailor Advanced has no official online or web version, no Android app, and no iOS app. It is a desktop program, published by its developers as a portable ZIP for Windows and as AppImage and .deb packages for Linux. macOS users are not covered by an official binary either — their options are building from source or the workarounds in our Mac guide.
Searches for “ScanTailor Advanced online” or “ScanTailor APK” are common enough that this page exists to answer them directly, and to warn you about what you will actually find if you go looking.
Why There Is No Web Version
ScanTailor Advanced is an interactive post-processing tool for scanned pages: you load raw scans from your own disk, work through page splitting, deskewing, content selection, page layout, dewarping and output, and save the processed pages locally. It was designed — from the original ScanTailor of 2007 through today’s Advanced fork — as software that runs on your own computer, entirely offline, on files that never leave your machine. The project publishes desktop releases on GitHub and nothing else: no hosted service, no browser app, no mobile edition.
Beware of Sites and Apps Using the Name
Because the name is searched for, third-party sites offer things the project never made: “online” versions that ask you to upload your documents to unknown servers, “APK” downloads for Android, and installer packages for platforms the project does not ship. Treat all of them with skepticism:
- None of them is published or endorsed by the project. The official source is the project’s GitHub repository — source code plus the Windows and Linux binaries.
- Uploading documents to a random “online ScanTailor” is a privacy risk. People post-process books, records and personal documents; handing those files to an unverifiable service gives up control of them for no benefit.
- An unofficial app cannot be verified against an official checksum — there is no official mobile or web release to compare it with, which is exactly what makes the name attractive to repackagers.
The rule is simple: if it runs in a browser tab or on a phone and calls itself ScanTailor Advanced, it is not from the project.
The Practical Alternative: Phone for Capture, Computer for Processing
Wanting a phone version usually means wanting to capture pages with the phone in your hand. That part of the workflow works perfectly well today — it is only the post-processing that needs a computer:
- Capture on the phone or camera. Photograph or scan the pages. Straightforward capture is all you need at this stage; the cleanup is ScanTailor’s job. Our hardware guide covers capture options from phone cameras to overhead book scanners.
- Transfer the files to a computer. USB cable, local network share, or any file-transfer method you already use — the images are ordinary files.
- Process in ScanTailor Advanced. Split the pages, deskew, select content, set the page layout, dewarp and output clean pages, following the six-stage pipeline.
- Continue on the computer. If you then want searchable text, note that ScanTailor itself does not do OCR — the project’s README puts scanning, OCR and assembling multi-page documents outside its scope. Its output is the clean, straight, high-contrast pages that OCR tools work best on.
If you do not have a Windows or Linux computer of your own, the portable Windows build runs from a USB drive on any suitable PC without installation, which is as close to “anywhere” as the real software gets.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an official ScanTailor Advanced web app?
No. There is no official online, browser-based or cloud version of ScanTailor Advanced. The project publishes desktop software only — a portable ZIP for Windows and AppImage/.deb packages for Linux.
Is there a ScanTailor Advanced app for Android or iPhone?
No. The project has never released an Android or iOS app. Anything in an app store or APK site using the name is a third-party product, not the project’s software.
How can I use ScanTailor Advanced if I mainly work on my phone?
Use the phone for what it is good at — capturing page images — then transfer the files to a Windows or Linux computer and do the post-processing in the desktop program. The portable Windows build can even run from a USB drive if the computer is not yours.
