From Legacy to Advanced
ScanTailor was originally created by Joseph Artsimovich in 2007, quickly becoming the gold standard for book scanning post-processing. However, as the original project ceased development in 2014, the digital archiving community faced a gap in support for modern hardware.
The Advanced (vigri) branch emerged as the definitive successor. It wasn’t just a maintenance update; it was a total overhaul. By integrating sophisticated 3D dewarping algorithms and moving to modern frameworks, it restored professional-grade scanning capabilities to Windows 11 and macOS users.

The “Advanced” Advantage
The Engineering Behind Perfection
ScanTailor Advanced isn’t just a filters gallery. It’s a sophisticated image processing engine built on high-performance C++ and geometric modeling.
3D Geometric Dewarping
Our algorithm constructs a virtual 3D mesh over the curved page. By calculating the physical “arch” of the book spine, it re-projects the image onto a 2D plane with zero perspective distortion—something standard deskewing cannot achieve.
Local Adaptive Thresholding
Unlike global binarization, our engine analyzes pixel density in local clusters. This ensures that even if a scan has uneven lighting or “bleed-through” from the back page, the text remains crisp and the background remains pure white.
Asynchronous Batch Logic
Developed in modern C++, the vigri branch utilizes asynchronous processing. While you are adjusting parameters on page 10, the engine is already pre-rendering page 50 in the background, maximizing multi-core CPU efficiency.
“Our goal is to eliminate the ‘human tax’ of book scanning. The software handles the geometry; you focus on the knowledge.”
Driven by the Community
ScanTailor.net is more than a download mirror. We are a global network of archivists, developers, and bibliophiles. The vigri branch thrives because of collective intelligence—where feedback from a researcher in Tokyo meets the code optimization of a developer in Berlin.
As an open-source project under the GNU General Public License, we ensure that these sophisticated tools remain accessible to everyone forever. No subscriptions, no hidden fees, and no proprietary barriers to human history.
