ScanTailor Advanced vs VueScan: Capture Software vs Post-Processing
Of all the “versus” questions we get, this one rests on the biggest misunderstanding. VueScan talks to your scanner. ScanTailor Advanced has never met your scanner. They sit at opposite ends of the same pipeline — and for flatbed book scanning, the strongest setup uses both.
What Each Program Actually Is
VueScan is commercial scanning software by Hamrick Software. In Hamrick’s words, it “is a scanning application for Windows, macOS, and Linux that replaces your scanner’s software,” working with flatbed, document and film/slide scanners. Hamrick says it supports over 8,000 scanners from 42 manufacturers — including old models whose makers dropped driver support, which is its famous use case. It also includes built-in OCR and multi-page PDF creation.
ScanTailor Advanced is a free, open-source post-processing tool. It imports page images that already exist and cleans them: split pages, deskew, select content, page layout, dewarping, output. Its README states that scanning itself is out of scope — the program contains no scanner driver and cannot capture anything.

When You Need Which
You need VueScan when…
- Your scanner has no working driver for your current operating system — the classic VueScan rescue.
- The manufacturer’s bundled software is missing features you need at capture time, or you want one consistent capture tool across several scanners.
- You scan film or slides and want capture-side controls such as multi-exposure and color calibration (areas Hamrick emphasizes).
You need ScanTailor when…
- Your captured pages are book spreads that must be split into single pages.
- Text lines curve near the spine, margins wander from page to page, or pages need systematic deskewing and binarization beyond capture-time tweaks.
- You are processing a whole book as a batch, not a few office pages.
The Flatbed Pipeline That Uses Both
- Capture with VueScan: scan each spread as a high-resolution TIFF. Our DPI guide explains choosing 300 vs 600 DPI, and the hardware page covers capture settings that make post-processing easier.
- Post-process in ScanTailor Advanced: split the spreads, deskew, set one page layout for the whole book, dewarp, and export clean pages.
- OCR / assemble afterwards if you need searchable text — VueScan’s own OCR can serve for light needs, or use a dedicated OCR step as in our FineReader comparison.

Verdict
Not competitors — complements. VueScan decides how pixels get off the scanner; ScanTailor decides what shape the pages are in afterwards. If your scanner already works and your scans are flat single pages, you may need neither program’s help. If you scan books on a flatbed, the pair covers the two ends of the job that bundled software usually does badly.

FAQ
Can VueScan replace ScanTailor Advanced for book scanning?
No. VueScan’s cleanup happens at capture time — deskewing, cropping, blank-page removal. It does not split two-page spreads, dewarp curved book pages or normalize margins across a book. Those are post-processing jobs, and they are ScanTailor’s entire design.
Can ScanTailor Advanced control my scanner?
No. It has no scanning function at all — scanning is explicitly out of the project’s scope. It only processes image files you captured with something else.
Is VueScan free?
VueScan is commercial software with paid editions; Hamrick lets you download it to check your scanner’s support before buying. ScanTailor Advanced, by contrast, is free and open source.
