ScanTailor Advanced on Linux: AppImage, .deb and Wayland Notes

Linux is where the newest ScanTailor Advanced releases land. The current release, v1.2.1 (May 24, 2026), is a Linux-only release: the project publishes an AppImage and a Debian package on its GitHub releases page, and the download page links both. This guide explains how to run each format, the one compatibility limitation the release notes call out, and how the program behaves on Wayland.

The Two Official Formats

  • AppImage: scantailor-advanced-v1.2.1-x86_64.AppImage — 30,005,752 bytes. A single self-contained file that runs on most distributions without installation.
  • Debian package: scantailor-advanced_1.2.1_amd64.deb — 1,631,652 bytes. For Debian, Ubuntu and derivatives, installed through the system package manager.

Both are published with SHA-256 checksums on the download page, so you can verify your file with sha256sum before running it.

Running the AppImage

  1. Download the AppImage from the download page.
  2. Make it executable: chmod +x scantailor-advanced-v1.2.1-x86_64.AppImage
  3. Run it: ./scantailor-advanced-v1.2.1-x86_64.AppImage

That is all an AppImage normally needs. One general note: AppImages rely on FUSE to mount themselves, so on a minimal system without FUSE support installed, install your distribution’s FUSE package first (or extract the AppImage instead). This is a property of the AppImage format in general, not of ScanTailor specifically.

Compatibility limitation, straight from the v1.2.1 release notes: the AppImage is built on Ubuntu 24.04 and requires a compatible glibc — typically Ubuntu 24.04 or newer. On Ubuntu 22.04 and similar older bases, the project directs you to the .deb package or to building from source instead.

Installing the .deb Package

On Debian, Ubuntu and derivatives, download the .deb and install it with apt so dependencies are resolved automatically:

sudo apt install ./scantailor-advanced_1.2.1_amd64.deb

After installation, launch it from your applications menu or by running scantailor-advanced in a terminal.

The Executable Name Changed in v1.2.0

Since v1.2.0, the installed executable is called scantailor-advanced; in earlier releases it was scantailor. If you have scripts, desktop shortcuts or packaging that invoke the old name, update them — the project lists this as a breaking change in the v1.2.0 release notes.

Wayland Behaviour

The current builds are Qt5-based. On a Wayland session, if the QT_QPA_PLATFORM environment variable is not set, the program defaults to the X11 (xcb) platform plugin as a fallback, because native Wayland rendering could produce blank or broken previews and dialogs. v1.2.1 formalised this fallback so it can be switched off: set SCANTAILOR_NO_XCB_FALLBACK=1 if you want to disable the fallback and use native Wayland only (you can also set QT_QPA_PLATFORM yourself to wayland or xcb). The release notes are candid that the fallback is a pragmatic workaround and native Wayland rendering remains under investigation — so if your preview looks wrong on Wayland, the first thing to check is which platform plugin you are running under.

Is There a Flatpak?

Not an official one. The project’s README states there is no official Flathub listing yet for this fork; publishing there is a separate submission process that requires a maintainer to go through it. Until that changes, the AppImage and the .deb from the GitHub release are the official Linux downloads, and the release workflow publishes those two formats for each tag.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use the AppImage or the .deb?

On Debian/Ubuntu, the .deb integrates with your package manager and is the safer choice on older bases such as Ubuntu 22.04. The AppImage is the portable, distribution-independent option, but the v1.2.1 AppImage needs a glibc on the level of Ubuntu 24.04 or newer.

Why is the preview blank or broken on Wayland?

Native Wayland rendering in the Qt5 builds has known issues, which is why the program falls back to the X11 (xcb) plugin by default on Wayland sessions. Check that you have not disabled the fallback with SCANTAILOR_NO_XCB_FALLBACK=1 or forced QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland.

Is ScanTailor Advanced on Flathub?

No. There is no official Flathub listing for this fork yet, as the project’s README states. Use the official AppImage or .deb from the GitHub release.
